Christmas Mystery for Quilt Scandinavia 2005
designed by Merete Veian.
....
Here is this year’s Christmas Mystery. It is a Mystery in 4 parts. I hope you will enjoy solving it as much as I had making it for you.

At first some information:
Always read carefully through the text and look at the pictures before you start choosing and cutting your fabric.
The Mystery can be solved in two versions, - as a table runner that should measure about 22”x 54” or as a square quilt that should measure about 46” x 46” when completed.
When you look at the pattern, have in mind that the number of blocks before the slash is for the table runner, and the number of blocks behind the slash are for the quilt.
All the rotary cut measurements include ¼” seam allowance.
The fabric you need for this Christmas Mystery can come from your scraps and stash if you like.

For part one you will sew 4/9 blocks and need for each bock:
  • 5” x 6” of a yellow-orange fabric, and
  • 6” x 6” of a blue colour for the background, and
  • 3”x 32” for the strips at the edge of the block.

For part two you will sew 4/ 8 blocks and will need for each block:

  • 5” x 8” of red, and
  • 3” x 28” in a suitable colour for the background, and
  • 3”x 32” for the strips at the edge of the block.

For part three you will sew 6/ 4 blocks and will need for each block:

  • 5” x 8” of red, and
  • 6” x 14” in a suitable colour for the background, and
  • 3”x 32” for the strips at the edge of the block.

For part three you will also need:

  • 8”x 42” from 5/7 different fabrics that will go well with what you have chosen so far for the project.
  • For the binding:
12/ 14” x 42” of one fabric or bits and pieces of different fabrics, that also goes well with the rest of the project.
  • Batting and backside:
For the table-runner: about 24”x 60” batting and backing.
For the square quilt: about 50” x 50” batting and backing.

You can wait to choose your fabric until you have opened each part of the mystery. I’ve used the theme “Christmas” and “Playful summertime” as guidance to choose fabrics.
